NEW DUCKTALES

So Disney recently has shown the first image Ducktales image, and it's a really interesting one. Here, said image.
First revealed image of Ducktales (2017 show). Copyrighted Disney
Also, some info I've sourced from two articles in Disney's official "Oh My Disney!" clickbait site:

The new series will star the same beloved characters as the old: Scrooge McDuck, Huey, Dewey, Louie, Launchpad McQuack, Donald Duck, Duckworth, Gyro Gearloose, Flintheart Glomgold, Magica DeSpell, Poe, Ma Beagle, the Beagle Boys, Mrs. Beakley, and Webbigail Vanderquack.

This new series once again stars Scrooge McDuck, grandnephews Huey, Duey, and Louie, and of course, Donald Duck.

After the read more, I present some thoughts on it, and fan art of my own!

If you're familiar with Disney's recent output, the stylised flat look will also remind you of their recent Mickey Mouse shorts series, animated in Toon Boom and set throughout the world. They've won a bunch of awards, and personally are pretty great, so that's a good sign for this show here.

Additionally, the image looks pretty promising and interesting in other ways. For starters, look- the nephews have new and different designs! I wonder if it's an intentional throwback to Quack Pack- I suppose it was technically the last duck-based tv show aired.
If so, maybe we can divine it in the outfits- Louie was the sports jock, and here he's got a hoodie- maybe a sports hoodie? Dewey was the brainiac... and I suppose he's got a nerdy shirt? Dunno. Additionally, Webby's got a nice new design, reminiscent of Daisy's in Quack Pack; and appears to be as old as the other kids, which seems a positive so far considering her role as the annoying whiny baby before. Let's hope she doesn't fall into "perfect action girl!" as an opposite.

Also notice how Donald and Scrooge, in terms of colours, are clearly based on the traditional comic book designs. Additionally, the proportions and the nostril in Donald's face are very reminiscent of Barks. This together with the paper textures and the print texture in the background, promises an intentional throw to the comics.

This leads me to the real meat of this post. To be honest, as a kid, I never cared for Ducktales. To me, it was a watered-down version of the great comics I loved, so instead I rather preferred Darkwing Duck, which was a new thing.

The fact that they're specifically styling themselves after Carl Barks, and that Donald seems to have a bigger role this time around, gives me hope that in this new series, a series made in 2016, with access to the internet and in a post-Rosa era, with information worldwide available, that we might see more things from the comics. And not just Barks either, but Rosa, and even characters like Fethry or Brigitta.

So I tried depicting this in fan art. It's a desperate struggle, really- this isn't just fan art, the hope is that it goes viral somehow and someone at Disney sees it and goes "this is a good idea, let's use these characters". So in honour of such hopes, I give you...

  1. JOHN ROCKERDUCK AND FLINTHEART GLOMGOLD
These are the first ones I'd like to see. For one, to see Glomgold be correctly depicted as his South African self (and Magica be Italian too, incidentally!). I specifically based this one on Rosa's drawings, but you wouldn't need to, specifically. Just, he's not Scottish, man. Also his beard is different from portrayed.

Additionally, I'd love to see Rockerduck be used too, and I kinda think he might, considering his Barksian roots. I'd see him used as a more common, less villainous rival to Scrooge, I think.

 2. FETHRY DUCK
This I also hope is a likely character to appear. Comics-focused communities in the internet will always mention Fethry, and he's been appearing commonly in the comics published in America. I don't think he'd need to be a recurring character, but having one episode or two around him would be interesting - a bit like Donald in the original Ducktales, now I think of it!

 3. BRIGITTA MACBRIDGE
OK, this is when I'm entering entirely wish-fulfilment areas. Brigitta I'd consider in the same chances as Fethry, IE a non-Barksian character known in Europe who's also often mentioned, except
  • The fact she "contradicts" Rosa's love story of Scrooge and Goldie means there's also resentment against her;
  • Unlike Fethry, she seems to not be entirely established in all of Europe, just in the Italian markets.
Therefore, I've my doubts she'll appear. Still, I'd love to see her, even if only in a couple episodes too. She's been around for 50 years, come on.

  4. DICKIE DUCK (PAPERETTA YÈ-YÈ)
This isn't very likely at all. Dickie isn't even that popular in Italy, never mind being relevant enough to appear elsewhere. Still, I think you could make an interesting bunch of episodes with her. Mix it with doing a Rosa-inspired romantic story about Goldie. Have Dickie be kind of a symbol of Goldie in the story?

  5. QUACKMORE
I KNOW THIS WON'T HAPPEN AT ALL SINCE DUCKWORTH EXISTS BUT COME ON
A CAMEO
SOMETHING
PLEEEEEASE

Anyway, these are my assorted thoughts on the new show right now. How about you, readers? Feel free to post!

  1. Rockerduck would certainly be interesting, as long as they draw upon the differences between him and Glomgold that already exist in the original stories, and that I've tried to further emphasize in stories like "Mummy Fearest" (IDW's UNCLE SCROOGE # 7) and "Scrooge's Ark Lark" (IDW's UNCLE SCROOGE # 11), not to mention the upcoming IDW DONALD DUCK #12.

I'd also love to see Moby Duck. In both the new DuckTales series, and in the IDW comics!

    1. Moby Duck'd be fairly interesting too- maybe even, if they wanted to get a bunch of family members done at once, take a cue from the Italians' use of him in the last decade and have him be Fethry's employer in a maritime mailing company. Although then we'd have a problem of "where's Dim-Witty then?"

    2. Yes… After all, Moby Duck already appeared twice in animation, so there IS a precedent.

Excellent fan art anyway. As for… Quackmore ? Is that his English name ? I'm so used to him being "Baptist" (plus, Quackmore is supposed to be Donald's father's first name, so it's confusing that they'd have the same name). Well anyway, it's nice, but you draw him much shorter than I'd do. His legs are so… short ?…

  2. Yes, Glomgold as South African and Magica as Italian! I'd pass on Brigitta, not because I'm committed to Rosa's vision as the sole Duck Truth, but because I truly dislike the trope of the comically unrequitedly-lovelorn. Dickie is fine, though as I've repeatedly argued, she needs a better name in English--and since she's barely appeared in USA comics, there's no reason not to give her another name. Fethry is OK with me, though unfortunately DuckTales couldn't show Tabby thinking sarcastically about him.

Moby Duck is only conceivable if he's given a different job, such as the maritime mailing company you cite. As GeoX has made clear, anyone born after, oh, 1965, in the USA sees whaling as EVIL. So not only can he not chase whales in the story's present, he cannot be presented as having ever been a whaler.

    1. Dickie Duck's French name is Chris, which I find pretty good. The logical translation of the Italian Paperetta would be "Duckie" (as in 'little duck', which is what the name literally means). Thing is, there's no way to translate the nickname "Ye-Ye", since it is an anglicism in Italian that has no equivalent in English…

    2. Achille, it'd be a case where you'd translate to a similar genre of music. From Wikipedia:
Yé-yé (French pronunciation: [jeje]) was a style of pop music that emerged from France, Italy and Spain in the early 1960s. The term "yé-yé" was derived from the English term "yeah! yeah!", popularized by British Beat music bands such as the Beatles.

That to me would be the angle to attack- give her a name with "Beat" somewhere in it, a more stereotypical 60's British name (maybe inspired by Mod Culture?), or a reference to a specific artist in the genre.

    3. Or, follow the lead of the Brazilians, and give her a name reminiscent of a major female pop singer (Joni, Nina, Janis, Carly, Whitney, Cyndi). Personally, I don't think there's any reason to associate her with the 1960's--that would just date her. After all, Scarpa created her in 1966, so the 60's references were then current.

I'd also vote for a last name other than Duck. Donald and his family (HDL, Fethry), Daisy, Belle: that's quite enough Ducks. Nina Canette? (Canette is "female duckling" in French, right?)

      Eliminar
    4. I've a post planned on her, I think I'll offer some ideas on names then, since this is such a recurring discussion :P

      Eliminar
    5. Huh, "Canette" technically CAN be "female duckling" in French, but it also means "can" (as in soda can or beer can), and this use of the word is much more widely spread.

As for the 60's… I think that she is completely tied into the period (beginning with the way she dresses, her liking of pop art…). Trying to drive her out of it in the translations would be as ridiculous as the attempt to explain away the walkie-talkie craze of Donald in that story GeoX recently reviewed by there being a "retro" fashion in Duckburg.

If they made NEW stories with her, it would be another matter. But as long as we stick with translating the 60's and 70's stories, no modernizing, please.

    6. I'd argue keeping the 60's connection is no problem. For one, as our culture proves, things come back into popularity. For another, cartoons are all about keeping elements of the culture of the time crystalised- who wears spats or frock coats nowadays? How about Donald's sailor suit, which is a clear throwback to children using sailor suits in the turn of the 19th century? The Brazillians proved Paperetta's 60's-ness works fine so long as you have her listen to music from any era, otherwise her attitude fits fine and so could any naming reference.

  3. Even over the course of the original MOBY DUCK comic book series, whaling was eventually deemphasized in favor of cargo-hauling and just general seafaring travels. No, Moby should NOT be a whaler today! But, I still want to see him reintroduced.

  4. Moby Duck could be like the sea captain on "The Simpsons", who, admittedly, is not a real Captain, but an entrepreneur coasting off an image. Arrr...

Much like Spider-Man's brief appearance in the "Captain America: Civil War" trailer, this bit of art is going to get more scrutiny than DaVinci's "Mona Lisa" - I myself got into the act when I posted my own observations on my blog. Maybe we can try and discern coded messages according to the poses of the characters..

Who wants to wager whether Joe Torcivia or Thad Komorowski have a one-liner set to acknowledge that Scrooge knows two people in his life named "Quackmore"? :)

    1. ...And, who wants to wager that, if I *did* do such a line, there'd be a PUN in or around it somewhere?

I often wonder, if Thad, Jonathan Gray, and I were given the SAME story to translate and dialogue, how different each version would be!

DC Comics once published the same penciled illustration inked by different inkers to show how different it comes out. Applying this to translating and scripting would be quite the experiment as well.

And, I really enjoy your likening Moby Duck to the Sea Captain on The Simpsons - and I'll also throw in the similar (though, naturally, even more exaggerated) character on Family Guy. That would be fun to try.

    2. Ah, yes, "Seamus", with the four peg-legs for limbs. And Dimwitty would be the Disney counterpart to the "Squeaky-Voiced Teen". :)

  5. Just noticed this by looking closer... Is Webby wearing glasses?

    1. No, it's just the way the eyelashes are stylised as one solid shape. I'd think so, at least, since there's nothing bridging the eyes as there'd be if they were Glasses, as seen in Scrooge's.

      Eliminar
  7. That “black line” going backward from her eye on our right is not a “frame”? It’s to singular to be lashes.

And the lines around both eyes are thicker than for the other ducks. Just curious…

    1. No, I really do think it's just the lashes, it's just stylised into one shape instead of the more traditional, say, three. The lines are also just thicker on the top half, IE where you'd traditionally show the eyelashes.

  8. I am for all these guys and gals popping here and there.
Non-Barksian this, Barksian that , PHOOEY as Donald would say ! Bring in the fun and best stories on screen. No need for continuity or whatever, Barks , Scarpa and all cared about the STORY, the GAGS, the ENTERTAINMENT of it all !
I like Don Rosa but sticking to what he thinks is LIMITING as hell. He is not even THAT knowledgeable where it comes to animation so why would people stick to what he says ? And that whole Barks/Rosa verse is BS of the highest level. It totally goes against the way Barks was thinking of and making these stories. It all started with a smeagol-sounding duck in a sailor suit. It's ridiculous, it's goofy and it's AMAZING because of that !
    My Two cents ?
    * I take Brigitta any day over Goldie. It's cartoon ducks so the funnier the better. And there's a good reason Barks used Goldie ONCE (and she was not all that happy to see Scrooge BTW...)
    * Bring in both Flintheart and Rockerduck by establishing how EVIL the former is and how more of a "nouveau riche" the latter is.
    * YéYé would be great even in her 60's glory ! Make it a psychedelic episode if anything !
    * Things to adapt ? THIS http://devilkais.deviantart.com/art/Paperiade-445296616
    * A shot at Quack Pack ? I take it over Ducktales any day if only for the following reasons http://devilkais.deviantart.com/art/Underrated-Duck-Daze-The-Best-of-Quack-Pack-418870600

    Good day to you !
